PUBLIC NOTICE | Vehicle extension cord safety

Lacombe, Alberta (February 6, 2019) – According to Environment Canada, the temperature is expected to reach –31°C this evening. Many residents who normally do not plug in their vehicles overnight will do so when this kind of weather is expected.

Residents are reminded that electrical extension cords cannot be placed across public sidewalks because of the tripping hazard this creates for pedestrians.

“We do live in a harsh climate, but the need for people to start their vehicles in cold weather must be balanced with the need for pedestrian safety,” said Director of Corporate Services Diane Piche.

Section 404 of the City of Lacombe’s Traffic Bylaw 223 states: “No person shall place, or permit to be placed an electrical extension cord across a sidewalk or driveway whereby any person, animal, or vehicle may be in any way injured or damaged.”

If you need to plug in your vehicle or trailer, please ensure that the extension cord is suspended 8 feet (2.4 metres) above the sidewalk. This requirement is in effect all year round.

There are alternatives to laying cords across the sidewalk. See below for examples of local residents doing a great job in keeping our community safe.
