On May 3, 2017, Mayor Steve Christie was joined by nine Grade 6 students from École Lacombe Upper Elementary School, Terrace Ridge School, Lacombe Christian School, Father Lacombe School and College Heights Christian School for the annual “Mayor for a Day” program at City Hall.
The students met and had lunch with Councillors Peter Bouwsema, William McQuesten and Reuben Konnik, as well as Police Chief Lorne Blumhagen, Fire Chief Ed van Delden, CAO Dion Pollard and other City administrators. They also received certificates from MP Blaine Calkins
After a tour of the municipal offices, the students took part in a mock Council meeting, where they discussed a number of agenda items, including a traffic study of the 5-way stop at C &E Trail and 53 Street, littering within the city, and the need for a fulltime fire department.
“I’m excited about the Mayor for a Day program,” said Mayor Christie. “I believe it is essential that our youth have a chance to be ‘plugged in’ to the issues that are relevant to their city. This program provides our future leaders with an opportunity to be welcomed and mentored by the current generation of community leaders.”
Each student submitted an essay describing why they would be an ideal candidate as Mayor, which of their character traits made them a good leader, and which issues they thought were most important for the city's future.
